Abstract This paper uses the water-quenching or air-quenching RS to replace the GBFS to prepare supersulfate cement, and the effect of RS on the performance and hydration of supersulfate cement is researched. The results showed that water-quenching or air-quenching RS could effectively replace GBFS to prepare supersulfate cement. The clinker content of the prepared supersulfate cement was only 5%, but its mechanical performance can reach the level of 32.5 MPa grade common Portland cement. The supersulfate cement had the characteristics of lower water requirement of standard consistency, longer setting time, lower early mechanical performances but rapid growth rate of later stage mechanical performances. The hydration mechanism of RS-based supersulfate cement still followed the process of dissolution-depolymerization-sulfate excitation. Early hydration of the prepared supersulfate cement was more significantly affected by the cooling method of the RS, water-quenching RS could participate in the hydration reaction faster than that of air-quenching RS. Later hydration of the prepared supersulfate cement was closely related to the gypsum content, and the sufficient gypsum ensured the continuous hydration reaction
