Abstract A large quantity of lithium slags(LS)are generated in the process of producing lithium salt using spodumene. Mineral compositions of LS are mainly aluminosilicate and gypsum, which make it an ideal raw material to be served as both blending material and retarder in preparation of cement. In this study, LS was proposed to prepare common Portland cement by simultaneously replacing blending material and gypsum, and the effects of LS content on the hydration and cement performances were investigated. The results indicated that the addition of LS increased the water requirement of standard consistency of the cement. A low dosage of LS (10%) shortened the setting time of cement, while a further increase of LS content led to a significant prolongation of the setting time. The early-age (3 days) mechanical performances of the cement mortars containing LS decreased with the increase of LS content, but their long-term mechanical performances exhibited a higher growth rate, the 28 days mechanical performances of the cement mortars containing LS exceeded those of the reference PI cement. Gypsums in LS are more readily soluble, which increased the initial hydration exothermic rate and delayed the induction period. In addition, aluminosilicates in LS underwent secondary hydration reactions with Ca(OH)2 at later stages, generating more C-(A)-S-H gels, which contributed to the cement mortar strength developmen
