Abstract In this paper, the effect of mechanical activation on the activity of blast furnace slag was systematically studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the crystal structure, particle size change, chemical functional groups and microstructure of the samples after different grinding times (20 min, 30 min and 40 min), respectively. The results showed that the mechanical activation can significantly improve the potential activity of blast furnace slag, and the optimal grinding time was 20 min. After mechanical activation, the slag particles were deformed and the specific surface area was increased. Under the action of mechanical force, the structure of blast furnace slag was damaged, and the Si-O bonds were rearranged, and a large number of surface reaction sites were formed. The activity index increased by 9.01% at 28 days.
