Abstract The refractive index is an important input parameter for testing powder fineness using Mie theory analysis laser particle size method, but it is difficult to obtain refractive index of samples especially unknown samples such as new materials. In this study, a method determining refractive index by analysis the relationship between the input refractive index and the data fitting residual in laser particle size testing analysis was investigated. The results showed that the refractive index of the sample measured using this method has better consistency with data in literature, and using the measured refractive index as an input parameter can obtain good laser diffraction particle distribution results
