Abstract The surface retardation technology for roughening treatment of precast concrete components is a key method to address quality issues such as peeling, cracking, and spalling caused by insufficient bonding at the interface between precast and cast-in-place concrete. The retarding component iis critical for achieving effective retardation. This study systematically investigated the effects of sodium gluconate, sucrose, and maltodextrin—used individually or in combination—on concrete setting performance, etching depth, and compressive strength. The results showed that under single-component conditions, sodium gluconate and maltodextrin improved retardation with increasing dosage but caused continuous strength reduction. Sucrose exhibited optimal retardation at 9% dosage, with a penetration resistance per unit area of 1.9 MPa and etching depth of 4.8 mm, though compressive strength also decreased with higher dosages. In composite conditions, a mass ratio of sodium gluconate: sucrose: maltodextrin at 3:2:1 demonstrated superior synergy, significantly enhancing retardation without compromising compressive strength. At 6% dosage, penetration resistance per unit area decreased to 1.3 MPa, etching depth increased to 5.4 mm, and the 28-day compressive strength ratio reached 101%
