Abstract In view of the poor rheological and mechanical properties of fine tailings in mine filling, a new gelled material of cementation powder was developed and compared with the traditional gelled material cement. Through the rheological test of filling slurry, mechanical properties test of filling material, scanning electron microscopy(SEM)analysis and X-ray diffraction(XRD)analysis, this paper studied the effects of different cementing materials on the properties of fine tailings filling materials. The results show that cementation powder is a superior cementing material compared with cement and is suitable for filling fine tailings. It can improve the rheological properties of filling slurry, enhance the stability of fine tailings filling slurry, and prevent the separation of filling slurry. Cementing powder can improve the compressive strength of fine-grained tailings filling materials, and enable fine-grained tailings filling materials with low cement-sand ratio to replace cement-based filling materials with high cement-sand ratio, thus reducing the dosage of cementing materials and saving the cost of mine filling. When cementation powder is used as the gelled material, abundant dihydrate gypsum in the fine grained backfilling filling material reacts with hydration tricalcium aluminate to produce substantial ettringite (AFt) under alkaline conditions. These hydration products can compact the internal space of the backfill material and effectively improve the compressive strength of fine-grained tailings filling materials.
