Abstract Eutectic phosphorus (CaHPO4·2H2O) in industrial by-product phosphogypsum is a key impurity affecting the performance of phosphogypsum building gypsum. This paper takes Xinyangfeng water-washed phosphogypsum as the research object. Through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis methods, it systematically explores the physical property characteristics of eutectic phosphorus, the determination method of its content and the mechanism of its effect on the performance of gypsum, revealing the existence form and structural characteristics of eutectic phosphorus. The test results show that eutectic phosphorus exists in the gypsum lattice in the form of a solid solution, and its content can be characterized by the difference between total phosphorus and soluble phosphorus. Meanwhile, the presence of eutectic phosphorus significantly affects the hydration process, strength development and durability of phosphorus building gypsum. This research provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the resource utilization of phosphogypsum
