Abstract In view of the problems such as high cost, low utilization rate and limited consumption for the treatment of gold tailings, this paper prepared gold tailings-based recycled aggregates by a turntable ball-forming technology using gold tailings as a raw material. The effects of binder-sand ratio and curing methods on the properties of gold tailings recycled aggregate were investigated, such as particle size, water absorption rate and crushing value. The results showed that water absorption rate and crushing value of recycled aggregate decreased with the increase of the binder-sand ratio. Compared with steam curing and standard curing, carbonization curing reduced the water absorption and crushing value of regenerated aggregate. The optimal composition of gold tailings-based recycled aggregate is 50% cementitious materials and 50% gold tailings. The optimal recycled aggregate had an apparent density of 2 650 kg/m3, water absorption rate of 3.2% and crushing value of 3.1%. The 28 d compressive strength of concrete prepared with 10% recycled aggregate was 52.5 MPa, slightly lower than that of control concrete, which was in line with the standard requirements
