Abstract Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) is a novel cementitious material, with the characteristics of early strength, fast hardness, high early strength, good bonding capacity and construction at 0 ℃. Therefore, it exhibits promising potential for applications such as rapid repairs and specialized cementing. However, the poor water resistance of MPC hinders its widespread adoption in numerous fields. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MPC water resistance research, including its hydration mechanism, the underlying causes of its inferior water resistance and various modification strategies. Furthermore, it explores future research directions in this field.
