Abstract: In order to promote the resource utilization of steel slag and solve the problem of practical application hindered by low activity of steel slag, this paper uses steel slag, metakaolin and silica fume as admixtures to prepare mortar specimens by an L9(33) orthogonal experimental design. The influences of admixture ratio, total admixture amount and steel slag fineness on the mechanical properties of mortar specimens are studied, and the optimal combination of horizontal factors is screened. Based on above, steel slag-based ternary concrete is prepared, and the optimal combination of horizontal factors is optimized and verified. The results show that the mortar specimens are most affected by the total admixture amount, and the optimal combination of horizontal factors is 1:2:2 (silica fume: steel slag: metakaolin) with the total admixture amount of 20% and the steel slag fineness of D90 is 147 μm. At the same time, compared with steel slag concrete with single admixture, the compressive strength of steel slag-based ternary concrete designed with optimal horizontal factors increases by 31.71% at 3 days, 54.21% at 7 days, and 9.84% at 28 days. Compared with standard cement concrete, the compressive strength increases by 4.68% at 3 days, 15.88% at 7 days, and 5.71% at 28 days, which meets the strength requirements for steel slag as an admixture in practical application to concrete.
